♦ Day 1: Marrakech – Atlas Mountains – Ait Ben Haddou – Dades Valley.
After an early breakfast, your shared 3-day desert tour from Marrakech to Fes begins with a pick up from your riad or hotel by your friendly, knowledgeable, English-speaking Sahara Holiday Tours driver. After introductions, you’ll be driven off on a trip through the attractive countryside to the mighty High Atlas Mountains, cutting through them at the Tizi n’Tichka pass which at 7,234 ft (2,205 metres) above sea level is the highest major mountain pass in North Africa. Known as the “Gateway to The Sahara”, it gives you all-around views of the scenery below.
As you get close to the Sahara, you will be able to explore the famous UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Ben Haddou, an astounding fortified village, built on a steep hillside over a river. On top is a museum and fortress which also provide panoramic views. Ait Ben Haddou has been used for location work in many a Hollywood movie and TV series including “The Mummy” and Game of Thrones. After leaving Ait Ben Haddou, the final stop for the day is at the jaw-dropping Dades Valley, famed for its weird rock formations, lush oases, and date palm groves. The Dades Valley is very popular with nature lovers due to the richness of animal and plant life found here. You will spend the night in a nice hotel in the heart of this beautiful valley.
Day 2: Dades Valley – Todra Gorges – Sahara Desert Tour.
On the next day of your tour, you will exit the Dades Valley, heading onward through the Todra Gorges, a sheer-walled canyon cut through the mountains by a river over thousands of years. The vertical walls are much frequented by, rock-climbers looking for beauty and adventure. Travelling on southwards, over bleak rocky terrain, you will suddenly see the towering dunes of the Erg Chebbi rising up over the horizon like a row of rounded mountains. At the base of them, the town of Merzouga is located, where your transport awaits for an exciting camel trek over the shifting sands as the sun sets like a burning ball beyond the dunes.
Your destination is a desert nomad encampment. Here, you will share a glass of refreshing mint tea, enjoy a specially prepared dinner, and then sit by the campfire exchanging stories with your friendly and curious Berber hosts. Sleep in the comfortable tented accommodation luxury tent beneath the silver gleam of the Milky Way to the soothing strains of sweet Berber music.
Day 3: Merzouga – Ziz Valley – Ifrane – Fes.
It’s a very early start on day three of your trip, but well worth it as you will see the spectacular sunrise over the dunes of Erg Chebbi. After your trusty camel takes you back across the desert through the shifting shadows as the sun ascends in the heavens, there is time to freshen up before leaving for historic Fes, first passing through the verdant Ziz Valley.
The River Ziz runs 175 miles (282 km) from the peaks of the High Atlas Mountains into the Sahara Desert in Algeria. You will drive along it heading north, passing innumerable pretty Berber villages, hilltop forts, and date palm groves. A little before reaching Fes, you will also stop at the quaint Berber town of Ifrane on the fringes of the cedar forests and the edge of the Middle Atlas Mountains. Ifrane is known as the “Switzerland of Morocco”, as its dwellings are in a Swiss alpine style of architecture. Watch out for The Lion of Ifrane, a statue made by Italian prisoners during WWII.
Your shared 3-day desert tour from Marrakech to Fes concludes with bidding farewell to your new friend, your guide/ driver, as he drops you off at your accommodation in Fes.
